Hany Armanious - La Biennale Di Venezia Australian Pavilion

Hany Armanious's sculptural practise is rooted in the process of casting. but rather than transform singular creations into multiples rendered in valuable materials such a bronze, he meticulously cast found everyday objects - usually cast off or discarded things - in deliberately non-precious materials, most commonly polyurethane resin.

"Breton and other Surrealist who invented the secondhand store as a temple of vanguard taste and upgraded visits to flea markets into a mode of aesthetic pilgrimage. The Surrealist ragpicker's acuity was directed to finding beautiful what other people found ugly or without interest."

Several years ago, an old black dress made of velvet caught my attention in a second-hand shop. I
examined the garment carefully. There was no label. The style of the dress was from the twenties. The seams revealed the dress was handmade. The owner of the shop told me that she had bought it in Paris. I tried the dress on and it fitted me perfectly. I became intrigued by the history of the dress. Who was the woman who had had the dress made? What was her life story?

Our daily life is full of history. I am fascinated by the history that you cannot find in library books, official files or archives. This "unwritten history" surrounds me all the time. I can feel its presence in various ways: as a rip in a coat; as a place worn thin in an armchair; as a light footprint on an inner sole of a shoe.

"Justine's desire to challenge and explore production processes has led to an informed, dual practice of method and creation. Deriving inspiration from primary research into new environments and foreign materials, Justine's work aims to question how we perceive the world, and how our eyes and social understandings may deceive what we see in front of us. Walter Benjamin's theory of Aura provides the core foundation for much of her practice, which is particularly evident in her recent casting works. The concept of the Aura implies authenticity, however, there is no authenticity without its destruction through mechanical reproducibility. Reproducible art replaces authenticity, with an added extra — unheard of perceptions are made possible."
